“Do not be Afraid”
Mark 4:35-41
June 24, 2012

How can we describe this life we live now?

The gospel lesson for this morning suggests that it is like riding a boat in the sea.  We are the passenger.  Sometimes we sail smoothly and enjoy the ride, but at times we encounters unexpectedly the raging storms and we get seasick.  The pains of despair, loneliness and hopelessness are pounding us mercilessly.

Dr. Scott Peck is right when he starts one of his best-seller book, The Road Less Travelled, with this sentence: Life is difficult.

Honestly, have you been in a storm recently?  At home, at your place of work or with the children?   How do you react to the turbulent situation?  It is hard, isn’t it, in the midst of a high pressure world, to be calm, always in control.

How can we stay calm when the phone rings at the wrong time, the checkbook balance gets low, the children are not happy at school, the grown-up children are out of control, or the car won’t start?

How do we stay calm when promotion don’t come, family constantly argue and fight one another, the body develops aches and pains, abusive neighbor keeps bothering or world peace deteriorates?

Our national life, church life, family life, in all their aspects, can flair up like a storm out of nowhere at any time.  One moment all is fine and out of nowhere bursts a mindless wave of rage.  It seems like everything we worked for is destroyed.  Sometimes it is all too much for us.  We cry out in desperation “When will it all end, Lord?”

Think for a moment, identify that last storm of conflict and emotion and despair in your own life.  Maybe it is still raging.

The Gospel lesson for today is God’s gift to all of us who live this difficult life and all of us who fear because of all those storms in our life journey.

The disciple did as Jesus instructed.  They set sail that beautiful afternoon on the Sea of Galilee.  The sun was shining and Jesus, weary from the day’s activity, fell asleep.  As the late afternoon faded into dusk, trouble began to loom.  The white puffy clouds in the sky were replaced by low hanging, dark clouds.  The stilled waters began to churn with white caps and then large waves slammed the side of the tiny boat.

All of a sudden the disciples became chaotic.  They tried everything they can do to save the boat and themselves.    But look.  Amazingly, as this violent storm was taking place and as they were being afraid of dying, Jesus was asleep.

When John Wesley was coming to America, he found himself in the middle of a storm. This was in the days before his Aldersgate experience. He was frightened to death. He frantically ran around the ship seeking shelter.

In the process, he came across a group of Moravians who were singing and calmly praying. No fear. No panic. Not even among the children. Wesley could not believe this and he asked the source of their strength. They replied: “We have Jesus as our Savior.” This was one of several turning points in Wesley’s life and the beginning of a friendship with these Moravians.

Storms can come suddenly during the life journey. The disciples experienced it, as did Wesley. We all do.

That is when we go to the stern of the boat to find Jesus asleep.  He doesn’t even know that a storm is raging. He can’t even hear the howl of the wind. He doesn’t even feel the waves crashing into the side of the boat. The water splashing all over his face doesn’t disturb him. Doesn’t he care? Teacher, don’t you care if we drown? Doesn’t God care about what I am going through?

As you all know well, many of the disciples were experienced fisherman. They had encountered those stormy waters hundreds of times before. They had been caught in storms before: so, why all the fear in this storm?

One obvious answer is this was a storm unlike any other. Possibly, but I don’t think so. I think this storm was like any other. They knew how to deal with.

What I think is this: They are chastising Jesus for not doing any help.  The disciples find Jesus asleep and they say, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

In other words, are you just going to sleep there or you going to get up and help? Get up and grab a bucket and grab an oar Jesus; we need all hands on deck now.  Don’t you see?  Don’t you care?

It is at this moment that the unexpected happens. Jesus gets up. He does not grab a bucket or an oar. He commands the storm to be calm and makes it calm down. And this is why the disciples were terrified.

Look at the story. The disciples are certainly frightened by the storm. They need everyone to pitch in but Jesus rebukes the storm, “Quiet! Be still!”

The disciples are stunned. They were looking for human help. What they got was divine intervention.  They were looking for a hand. What they got was a God.

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Jesus asks, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Now listen to this: They don’t know who it is that rides in the boat with them.  “Do you still have no faith?  Do you still not understand who I am?”

They were frightened during the storm but after the storm they were terrified. Why? Because of he who was in the boat. Their real problem is not the storm outside but the storm of doubt and unbelief inside.  That’s what the disciples learned this day on the Sea of Galilee. They thought the danger lie outside the boat. They would soon learn the real danger lie within the boat, within their own hearts. In a word, they lacked faith.

Where do you turn in the midst of the storm? It is an urgent question. It is a theological question. The answer will depend upon where you place your ultimate loyalty.

It was not the only time that the disciples had to face the question. In the 6th chapter of John we read where the crowds began to fall away from Jesus. It was when Jesus was talking about a way of discipleship, talking about taking your own cross and following him all the way.  It was at this point that Jesus turned to the disciples and asked, “Do you also wish to go away?”   It was Simon Peter who spoke for the group.  “Lord,” he answered, “to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; we have come to know you as the Holy One.”  When we find ourselves sinking in the midst of a storm, where else are you going but God?

There was a woman in a community who was well known for her simple faith and great calm in the midst of many trials. Another woman who had never met her but had heard of her came to visit one day. “I must find out the secret of her calm, happy life,” she thought to herself.

As she met her she said:” So you are the woman with the great faith I’ve heard so much about.”  “No,” came the reply. “I am not the woman with the great faith, but I am the woman with the little faith in the great God.”  When you find yourself in the midst of a storm and the boat is sinking, may I suggest that you turn to Christ?

Where else are you going to go? Only Jesus has the words of eternal life. Only God is the Holy One. Only Jesus can calm the storm. Only God delivers.

Saying Amen to this, we join Helen Lemmel praying together, “O soul, are you weary and troubled?  No light in the darkness you see?  There’s light for a look at the Savior and life more abundant and free.

Singing together, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.  Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely in the light of His glory and grace.”

“Why are you afraid,” he asked. “Have you no faith?”

I have been a pastor long enough to learn that there is a favorite chapter in the Bible for people in crisis.  Without fail they want to hear the 23^rd Psalm.   In the 4^th verse, David declared, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I fear no evil.”  “Why”  One wants to ask David, “are you so unafraid?”  He answers in the next line: “Because thou are with me.  Because God is with me.”

Now, let us be clear about this. The promise that is made to us is that of God’s presence, no more, no less. In the midst of the storm, God will be in the boat with you.  Yes, God is with us in the middle of the stormy journey.  We can rest in God.

Imagine with me a picture of Jesus and his disciples in the boat.  Imagine Jesus sleeping in the middle of the raging storm.  Imagine also all the disciples sleeping with Jesus.  What a beautiful picture it might be.

We need not panic, though the situation may appear bleak. The Lord is in the boat with us.  We need not forsake our witness. The Lord is in the boat with you.  We need not become immobilized. The Lord is in the boat with you. That is the promise.  The Lord sings this song for us today once again.

“I will come to you in the silence.  I will lift you from all your fear.  You will hear my voice.  I claim you as my choice.  Be still and know I am here.  I am hope for all who are hopeless.  I am eyes for all who long to see.  In the shadows of the night, I will be your light.  Come and rest in me.

Do not be afraid.  I am with you.  I have called you each by name.  Come and follow me.  I will bring you home.  I love you and you are mine.”  (Faith We Sing # 2218)

We celebrate our 56^th church anniversary.  We give thanks to God for His leadership since the birth of this faith community.  We move forward with confidence because we believe God is with us and God journey with us.

If we have a growing confidence that God is with us and is sufficient for our needs, we can continue to be a church, transforming the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Because we know and believe that there is nothing God and we cannot handle together, we can move one with joy.      Amen. Amen. Amen.

두려워 하지 말라.

마가복음 4장 35절 -41절

사는 것을 무엇으로 비교할 수 있겠습니까?

오늘 말씀은 사는 것은 배를 타고 여행하는 것과 같다고 말하고 있습니다.  여행하는 동안, 평화 로운 때도 있지만, 사정없이 폭풍이 밀려와서 혼란한 시간을 가질 때도 있습니다.  동감하시죠?   우리 인생이 그렇지요?  한번 자신에게 물어보세요. 삶 가운데에서 폭풍을 맞은 경험이 없으십니까?  집에서 일터에서?  자녀 문제로?  자금 문제로, 사업 문제로. 갑작스런 사고로?  이럴 때 어떻게 합니까?   침잠하기 힘듭니다.  어떻게 요동하지 않을 수 있습니까?  직장을 잃어버리고, 은행 잔고는 줄어들고 있고, 아이들은 학교에서 문제 일으키고, 몸이 고장나고, 매일 사용하는 자동차 문제가 있고, 사업은 잘 풀리지 않고.  어떻게 요동하지 않을 수 있습니까?  예상치 않게 몸은 아파오고 병원 진단 받아야 하고, 이웃과는 싸움이 끝나지 않고, 집안에도 싸움이 있고, 세상에는 전쟁소식만 있고.  언제 이 모든 것이 끝납니까?  순탄하게 인생의 여행이 연결되지 않습니다.  언제 어디서 무슨 일이 또 터질 지 모릅니다.   37절 말씀처럼, 우리 삶 가운데, 큰 폭풍이 불고, 물결이 넘치고 배가 침몰하려고 합니다.  곧 물에 빠져 죽을 것 같은 때도 있습니다.  그래서 스캇 펙 박사가 그의 책, The Road Less Travelled”의 첫 문장에 쓴 것 처럼, 사는 것은 어렵습니다.    언제 올 지 모르는 폭풍으로 두렵습니다.  두려움이 없는 사람이 없습니다.  오늘 성경 이야기는, 두려움에 있는 우리들에게 주시는 하나님의 선물입니다. 마태 마가 누가가 세 복음서의 저자들이 이 이야기를 전하고 있습니다.

제자들은 예수님 지시에 따라  6마일 넓이의 갈릴리 호수를 건너가고 있었습니다.  얼마나 평온한 오후였습니까?  하늘에는 태양이 빛나고.   예수님은 뱃머리에서 주무시고 계셨습니다.  그런데 날이 어두워지기 시작하면서 갑자기 폭풍이 일어났습니다.  제자들이 놀라서 어쩔 줄을 몰라 했습니다.  모든 것이 순탄하게 가다가, 갑자기 일이 생깁니다.  모든 것이 뒤죽 박죽이 됩니다.    그런데 신기한 것은 예수님은 주무시고 계셨습니다.

웨슬리 목사님께서 죠지아에 선교사로 오실 때에, 큰 풍랑을 만나셨는데, 모든 사람들이 갈팡질팡하고 있는데, 불안해 하는데, 두려워하는데, 모라비안 교도들은 함께 모여 기도하고 찬송하였습니다.  아이들도 함께 말입니다.  동요함이 없었습니다.  그래서, 웨슬리 목사님이 물었습니다.  “어떻게 그렇게 평온할 수 있는 지를, 그 때 그들의 대답이 “우리의 구주이신 예수님이 계십니다.”  웨슬리가 경험한 많은 회심의 경험 중의 하나입니다.

폭풍은 언제 올 지 모릅니다.   제자들이 경험했습니다, 웨슬리도 경험했습니다.   우리도 경험합니다.  이때 우리는 잠을 자고 있는 예수님을 발견합니다.  폭풍이 일어나는 지도 모릅니다.  귀를 찟는 바람 소리도 듣지 못하고 쿨 쿨 잠을 자고 있습니다.  요동함이 없습니다.  물결이 넘쳐 얼굴을 치는대도 잠을 잡니다.  예수님은 상관하지 않습니까?  우리를 돌보지 않습니까?  어떻게 된 것입니까?

그런데 여기서, 알게되는 것이 있습니다.  정말로, 문제는, 사실, 인생 가운데 일어나는 폭풍이 아니라, 우리가 가운데 일어나고 있는 폭풍이 더 큰 위협으로 우리에게 다가온다는 사실입니다.   내면의 폭풍으로 더욱 두려움에 빠지게 됩니다.  그 내면의 폭풍은 의심의 폭풍입니다.  불신의 폭풍입니다.  그리고, 우리 가운데 일어나고 있는 이 폭풍은 우리 자신이 어떻게 감당할 수 없습니다.  오직 주님 만이 이 모든 것을 잠잠케 하게 할 수 있습니다.  오직 하나님의 사랑의 힘으로 이겨나갈 수 있습니다.

이것을 제자들은 배운 것입니다.  그들은, 갈릴리의 폭풍이 아니고, 자신들 안에 있는 불신의 폭풍이 문제라는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.   믿음이 없어서.  믿음 없이는, 폭풍이 불어닥치는 이 세상의 삶을 살아갈 수 없음을 알게 되었습니다.

우리가 잘 아는대로, 제자들 중에서는 고기 잡은 사람들, 노련한 사람들이 있었습니다.  그런데 왜, 이렇게 갈팡질팡입니까?  한두번 겪은 일도 아닌데 말입니다.  아마도, 그 폭풍은 다른 때에 맞이한 폭풍과는 달리 더 거칠었기때문이 아니었을까 추측할 수 있습니다.  그런데, 제 생각은 이렇습니다.  제자들이, 예수님께 왜 잠만 자냐고?  왜, 이런 상황 속에서 예수님은 잠만 자고 도와주지 않느냐고 소리친 것으로 생각합니다.  폭풍을 맞아서, 배에서 물을 퍼내고, 배가 덮어지지 않도록 노를 힘차게 움직여야데 말입니다.  한 사람이라도 더 힘을 써야 하는데 말입니다.  이 때 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다.  예수님께서 잠에서 일어나셨습니다.  응답하셨습니다.  그런데, 예수님은 물을 퍼내거나, 노를 잡지 않으셨습니다.  “잠잠하라” 하시면서, 폭풍을 잠자게 하셨습니다.

제자들이 놀라 자빠진 것은 바로 이것 때문이었습니다.  물론 폭풍이 밀려와서 놀라자빠졌습니다.  모든 사람들이 동원해서 물을 퍼내고 배가 전복되지 않도록 해야만 했습니다.   그런데 예수님은 잠잠하라 하시면 폭풍을 재우신 후에, 제자들은 더 놀라게 됩니다.  그들은 예수님의 인간 힘을,, 노동력을 필요로 했습니다.  그런데 그들에게 주어진 것은 하나님의 권능이었습니다.   하나님을 만난 것입니다.

왜들 두려워하느냐?  아직 믿음이 없느냐?  제자들은 그 배에 예수님이 같이 타고 있는 지를 알고 있었습니다.  아니 몰랐습니다.  그 예수님이 누구인지를 알지 못했습니다.  그래요, 폭풍으로 먼저 놀랬습니다.  그런데, 예수님이 폭풍을 재우고 난 후에, 더 놀랬습니다.   왜냐하며는, 배 안에 타고 계신, 예수님이 누구인지를 알게 되었기 때문입니다.

그들의 문제는 폭풍이 아닙니다.  그들의 안에 일고 있는 불신의 폭풍입니다.   우리의 문제는 밖에서 불어닥치는 폭풍이 아닙니다.  우리 안에 일고 있는 의심의 폭풍입니다.  우리 가운데 일고 있는 이 불신, 의심의 폭풍은, 오직 예수님을 통해 나타나신 하나님의 사랑으로만 잠 재울 수 있습니다.  그것을 그들은 배운 것입니다.   하나님의 사랑에 대한 믿음이 없었던 것입니다.

폭풍이 일어날 때, 누구에게 눈을 돌리십니까?  어디에다가 여러문의 마음을 두십니까?

요한복음 6장에 보며는, 사람들에 예수님으로 부터 멀어지는 때가 있었습니다.  예수님이 이제 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라고 하셨을 때, 이 길만이 진정 하나님의 사람으로 사는 길이라고 말씀할 때에, 군중들이 떠나갔습니다.   그때, 예수님이 제자들에게 묻기를, “너희들도 가려느냐?”  제자의 대표로 베드로가 하는 말이, 주님, 우리가 어디로 갑니까?  당신은 영생의 말씀이십니다.  우리가 당신을 거룩한 자로 알고 있습니다.”

우리가 어디로 갑니까?    우리가 폭풍에 휩싸여서, 물에 빠져 죽으려고 하는데, 우리가 어디로 갑니까?  누구에게 눈을 돌립니까?

한 여인의 이야기.  순수한 믿음과 평온한 영혼의 소유자입니다.  한 여인이 비밀이 무엇인지를 알고 싶어했습니다.  만나자 마자 말하기를, “오 당신이 바로 큰 믿음의 소유자 이십니까?” 여인의 대답이 “아닙니다.

저는 큰 믿음의 소유자가 아니라. 큰 하나님을 믿는 작은 믿음의 소유자입니다.”  저는 예수님이 제자들에게 야단친 것이, 자기가 가지고 있는 능력을 믿지 못한 사실을 야단친 것이 아니고, 자기 누구인지를 아직 이해 하지 못한 제자들에게 실망한 것이라고 생각합니다.  그들이 이해했다면, 그렇게 두려워하지 않았을 겁니다.

인생 가운데 폭풍이 일어날 때에, 타고 있는 배가 가라앉아가고 있을 때, 누구에게 얼굴을 돌립니까?  누구에게 가시렵니까?   예수님이 말로 우리의 영생의 말씀이십니다.  하나님이십니다.  오직 하나님만이 우리를 모든 환난 가운데에서, 모든 두려움 가운데에서 인도해 내실 수 있습니다.

그래서 찬송합니다.  어찌 하여야 할 지 모를 때,  혼란과 두려움에 빠져 있을 때,  “눈을 주님께 돌려 그 놀라운 얼굴 보라.”  “내 모든 염려 주님께 맡깁니다.  내 모든 짐을 주님 앞에 내려 놓습니다.  어떻게 해야 할 지 모를 때, 주님 앞에 모두 내려 놓습니다.”

왜 두려워 하느냐, 아직 믿음이 없느냐?

이런 상상을 해 보았습니다.  폭풍이 일고, 주님이 뱃머리에 잠을 자고 게시고, 우리 모두도 잠을 자고 있는 모습.  얼마나 멋이 있는 장면입니까?    우리가 우리의 배에, 우리의 삶 가운데, 주님이 계심을 알지 못하면, 폭풍이 일어날 때 마다 두려움에 빠지게 됩니다.  그런데 주님이 함께 계심을 알면, 다릅니다.  주님의 약속이십니다.  내가 너와 함께 있다.  꼭 기억하고 간직해야 할 하나님의 약속이 있습니다.  우리와 함께 하십니다.  폭풍이 일어날 때에도, 그 가운데에, 우리와 함께 그 배안에 계십니다.

목사로 섬기며 사역하면서 알게 되는 것은, 시편 23편이 가장 많이 외우고 읽혀지고 있는 성령 말씀이라는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 4절 말씀, “내가 음침한 사망의 골짜기로 다닐 지라도, 두려워 하지 않을 것은, 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라.”  능력의 하나님, 사랑의 하나님이 나와 함께 계신데, 무엇이 두려움니까? 무엇으로 인해 두려움에 빠질 것입니까?   하나님과 내가 함께 있는 한 우리가 감당하지 못할 것이 없습니다.

교회 창립 56주년을 맞이합니다.  감사합니다.  지금까지 인도하여 주시고 지켜주신 주님께 감사합니다.  앞으로 나아갑니다.  두려움 없이 나갑니다.  왜냐하면 우리의 배 안에, 주님이 함께 하심이 있기 때문입니다

공포에 빠질 필요가 없습니다, 상황이 나쁘다고.  주님이 계십니다.  두려움에 빠질 필요가 없습니다, 앞이 캄캄하다고, 주님이 계십니다.  주님이 우리에게 약속하십니다.

이 약속을 믿고 나아가는 겁니다.  무엇이 이런 두려움과 공포에서 나올 수 있게 합니까?  바로 하나님께서 우리와 함꼐 계시고, 우리의 필요을 충족시켜 주심을 믿는 것입니다.  흔들림 없이 믿는 것입니다.  이 믿음이 모든 폭풍, 내면의 폭풍을 제어할 수 있습니다.  이겨나갈 수 있습니다.

이런 이야기가 있습니다.  젊은 스케이트 선수가 시합에 나가기 전에 초조 불안해 합니다. “코치 나 할 수 없습니다.  너무 무서워요.”  코치가 하는 말이, “너는 초조해 하는 것이지, 두려워하는 것이 아니야.”  “초조해 하는 것과 두려워하는 것은 큰 차이가 있어.  100불짜리 음식 시켜놓았으면 초조해 하지.  백불이 호주머니에 있으면, 괜찮아 그렇지?  두려움은 돈이 없는 줄 알면서도, 백불 짜리 음식을 주문하는 거야.”  선수는 말을 듣고 나가서 일등을 했다고 합니다.

우리는 100불보다 더 큰 기반이 있습니다.  우리는 우주 만물의 창조자 이시고 능력자이신 하나님이 있습니다.  홍해를 가르신 하나님이십니다.  아브라함 이삭 야곱 요셉의 하나님이십니다.  하나님의 백성을 놓지 않으신 하나님이십니다.  약속하신 하나님이십니다. “내가 너를 버리지 않는다, 놓지 않는다” 약속하셨습니다.  내 은혜가 네게 족할 것이다”

Faith we sing(작은 찬송가)에 있는 “너는 내 것이다” 라는 찬송을 부릅니다.  제가 좋아하는 찬송가 중의 하나가 되었습니다.  이 찬송 부를 때마다, 새 힘을 얻습니다.  감사가 넘칩니다.

“고요함 가운데 너를 찾아가리라.  너의 모든 두려움으로부터 너를 해방하리라.  넌 내 음성을 들을 것이다.  너는 내가 가장 귀히 여기는 존재이다.  잠잠하고 내가 너와 함께 여기 있음을 알아라.”   “나는 절망에 빠져 있는 사람들의 희망이다. 나는 보기를 갈망하는 모든 사람들의 눈이다.  캄캄한 밤에, 너희 빛이 되리라.  그리니 염려하지 말고 나에게 와서 기대어라, 쉬어라.”  두려워하지 말라. 내가 너와 함께 있노라.  너희이름을 내가 알고 있느니라.  나를 따르라. 쉼과 희망이 있는 집으로 인도해 주리라. 너를 사랑한다.  너는 나의 것이다.”  아멘.

Power of the Mustard Seed

Mark 4:26-32

A man was out on the golf course. He spotted another man who seemingly had four caddies. “Why so many caddies?” the first man asked the second.  The second golfer replied, “It’s my wife’s idea. She thinks I should spend more time with the kids.”   Surely, it is one way of doing it.   I suspect he’s the same man who won a toy at a raffle.  His five children were looking at him as he asked.  “Who should have this toy?  Who is most obedient to mother?  Who never talk back to mother?  Who does everything she asks?”  Five small voices said, “Okay Dad, you get the toy.”

Today is Father’s day.

A Family cycle magazine had research on fathers of middle class.  94% of men said being father is a hardest task a man can do.   It’s not easy being a Dad just as it is not easy being a Mom.  It’s not easy, particularly in today’s world, to be a Dad, for he is expected to be a superman in a family.  I read recently about a beautiful wedding in which a radiant bride processed down the aisle on the arm of her father. They reached the altar where the smiling groom stood waiting. The bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand.   It was . . . his credit card.   Being a father is costly.  But more than 85 % of fathers agree that “reward of being a father trumps all the other life achievements.”  Fatherhood is a God’s precious gift.

Our text for the day isn’t designed specifically for fathers. It is designed, rather, for followers, followers of Jesus Christ. Jesus is talking about the kingdom of God and he speaks hopeful words about the days ahead.  He says, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

Some of us may have a misconception about the plant which comes forth from a mustard seed. There is no such thing as a mustard tree. If you’re thinking of a tree like a mighty redwood emanating from a tiny mustard seed, you are mistaken.  The mustard plant is a shrub, but it is the largest of all the shrubs. It is large enough for birds to nestle in its branches.

What is the point of this Jesus’ parable?  It is that from a tiny seed, major accomplishments may emerge.  It is how God works in our midst and how God works with us in this world.  A tiny seed grows and becomes a big plant with large branches

The story of the early church is a good example of that growth.  It began with only the Master and twelve disciples and an unknown number of women. We must not forget the women; they were there from the very beginning giving their support, sharing their witness. But look at how much that tiny group has grown.

It is estimated that there are now 2.18 billion (yes, billion) Christians of all ages around the world, representing nearly a third of the global population.  Christians are also geographically widespread.

A century ago, this was not the case.  In 1910, about two thirds of the world’s Christians lived in Europe.  Today, according to historical estimates by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity, only about a quarter of all Christians live in Europe.  More than a third is in the North and South America (37%).  About one in every four Christians lives in sub-Saharan Africa (24%), and about one-in-eight is found in Asia and the Pacific  (13%).  (1)

While it is true that churches in Europe and North America have slowed their growth, and some churches have actually declined and even closed their doors, Christianity has grown enormously in the sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.  From the smallest of seeds, the mightiest of all plants has grown.

But the church is itself a seed. God planted us in the world to make a difference in the world. And even though we Christians have been a flawed group of people through the ages, the influence that we have had upon our world cannot be overstated.

Many of the values of modern civilization are rooted in Jesus and the Scriptures. For example, all the hospitals in America were originally Christian hospitals. All the colleges in America were originally Christian colleges. The civil rights movement had its origin in the Scriptures.

Even our system of government is a product of those values. Where did our Constitution come from? It was authored by Thomas Jefferson. Where did he get his ideas? The French Enlightenment. Where did the French Enlightenment get its ideas? The Renaissance. Where did the Renaissance get its ideas? The Reformation. Where did the Reformation get its ideas? From the Bible. (2)

A tiny seed planted more than two thousand years ago is slowly changing the world.  Still, that seed is growing and changing.  I am glad we, Fairfield Grace, are part of this growing movement.  Hallelujah!

Another mustard seed grows in our midst.  Parents know it very well.  A baby.  Whenever we see babies, we see another mustard seed growing in our midst, don’t we?

A baby is born into a household.  Can you imagine the significance of that event? Every baby born into this world represents hope for a new beginning and a new growth.

It is said that Queen Victoria was fascinated by the brilliance of the scholars who made up England’s Royal Society. On one occasion she whispered to Prime Minister John Bright, “Where do all these learned men come from?”  Bright replied, “From babies, your Majesty, from babies.”

Every time a baby is born into the world a potential mustard seed of greatness is planted.  We must make sure our church ministry growing as radically children and youth friendly ministries.

“What do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four and that Paris is the capital of France. Surely we need to teach them knowledge.

But we do have one more, more important to teach them.  We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a treasure! You are unique . . . there has never been another child like you.  Your eyes, your fingers, the way you move, the way you talk and smile.  You are a precious creation and masterpiece carved by God.  You have a great potential for anything.  Yes, you are a treasure, God’s beloved son and daughter.

Yes, they are a treasure, God’s beloved daughter and son.  Children are the primary mustard seed that our church is sowing.  If we do our job right, they will be ambassadors of Christ making differences with joy and confidence.  They will be Jesus’ disciples to serve God and their neighbors.

This is to say that one way we can serve God is by helping our young ones know who they are and what God can do through them.

On this Father’s day, I am thinking of my father who passed about 2 years ago.  I do not have any memories that he and I played at the playground.  He never took me out for dinner.  He never came to see my school teachers.  He never bought me a big, memorable Christmas gift on Christmas.  He did not do what the ordinary fathers do to their children.  But one thing he did for me that I still remember and thank him is this.  He prayed for me and with me.  He prayed every morning before having breakfast for his children.  I remember him praying one morning, placing his two hands over my head, , and asking God to bless me and guide me and fill me with wisdom and understanding. He taught me how special I am and how much God loves me.

I guess this is turning into a Father’s Day message after all.  But of course it’s not just for fathers. It is for everyone in this room. You don’t have to be a parent or a grandparent or an aunt or an uncle to influence a child’s life. Everyone in this room directly or indirectly influences our children whether you are a parent or not. I know some of the finest teachers in the history of the Sunday School movement have had no children of their own.

Dr. Fred Craddock, the eminent retired seminary professor once told of the teacher who most influenced him.  Her name was, “Miss Emma Sloan.” Miss Sloan was an elderly woman, single. She taught him in the Sunday School and once day she gave him a Bible. She wrote in the front: “May this be a light to your feet, a lamp for your path. Emma Sloan.” She taught the children to memorize the Bible; she never tried to interpret it. Craddock says he doesn’t remember her ever explaining anything. She said, “Just put it in your heart, just put it in your heart.”

She used the alphabet, and they’d go around the room saying verses. “A A soft answer turns away wrath. B Be ye kind, one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, as God also in Christ has forgiven you. C Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden. D Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. E Every good and perfect gift . . . F For God so loved the world . . .”

He says he can still remember those verses. Miss Emma didn’t explain what the verses meant. She just sowed those seeds of Scripture from the King James Bible in their hearts. They learned those verses and then recited them before the adults on Sunday afternoon. “I can’t think of anything, anything in all my life that has made such a radical difference as those verses,” says Fred Craddock. “The Spirit of God brings them to my mind appropriately, time and time and time again.” (3)

You don’t have to be a parent to have an influence on children or youth.  Many people ask, what great thing can I do for God? I can’t be an overseas missionary. I don’t have the resources to do much to feed the hungry. But every one of us can provide the proper environment for our children and our youth to grow in an atmosphere of love, support and spiritual guidance.   Yes, it takes the whole village to raise a child.

Our children are the mustard seeds that God has planted in our midst. We are to love them, nurture them and support them to be and become all God intended them to be.

“What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

That is the story of the church.  That is why we are here.  What a grand privilege. What a purpose that is for a life and for a church.  In the name of God, our Creator and the Son, our Redeemer and the Holy Spirit, our Sustainer.   Amen.

작은 겨자씨의 비밀

마가복음MARK 4:26 – 32

아버지에 관한 우스개 이야기를 찾아 보았습니다.

골프를 치는 데, 한 남자 골퍼에게 캐디 네명이 붙어 있었습니다.  그래서 함께 치는 사람이 묻기를, 왜 이렇게 캐디가 많으냐고 했더니, 이 남자가 대답하기를, “와이프 왈, ‘아이들하고 더 많은 시간을 가져야 한다고” 해서.

어느 날, 이 남자가, 장난감 하나를 추첨이 되어서 집에 가져 왔습니다. 아이 다섯명을 앞에 두고 아버지인 이 남자 왈, “누가 이 장난감을 가지면 될까?” “누가 가장 엄마 말을 잘 듣지? 누가 엄마한데 대꾸하지 않지? 누가 엄마 말대로 잘 하지?”    다섯아이들이 한 목소리로, “그것 아빠가져.”

아버지 날입니다.  한 조사에 의하면, 중산층 아버지의97퍼센트가 답하기를, 아버지로 사는 것은 가장 힘든 일이다. 라고 답했다고 합니다.  특히 요즘 아이들이 기대가 커서, 더욱 힘듭니다.

이런 이야기 읽습니다.  결혼식장에서 아버지가 딸을 데리고 입장을 합니다.  신랑 앞에 까지 갔을 때, 신부가 아버지에게 뽀뽀를 하고, 아버지에게 뭔가를 건네줍니다. 아버지 신용카드입니다.   아버지의 역할을 감당하기가 쉽지 않습니다.  힘듭니다, 그러나, 힘든만큼, 아이들을 키우는 보람과 기쁨이 아버지에게 주어지는 복이라고 생각합니다.

오늘 말씀은 아버지 날을 위해서 주어진 말씀이 아닙니다.  이 말씀은 예수님의 제자들을 위해서 주신 말씀입니다.  하나님의 나라가 어떠한 나라인가?  어떻게 하나님의 나라가 세워져 나가는가, 펼쳐져 나가는가 말씀하셨습니다.  오늘 비유로 말씀하셨습니다.  “어떻게 하나님의 나라를 설명할꼬?  어떤 비유로 그 나라를 설명할꾜.  아하, 하나님의 나라는 겨자씨 와 같다.  이 세상에 가장 작은 겨자씨 같다.  이 작은 씨를 심으면, 자라서 가장 큰 나무가 되는 데  거기에 새들이 둥지를 틀고 자리 잡는다.”

먼저, 겨자씨는 있지만, 겨자 나무 라는 것은 없습니다.  겨자 나무가 아니라 겨자 플랜트인데, 이것이 가장 큰 플랜트입니다. 이 큰 플랜트에 큰 가지가 생겨서, 새들이 찾아옵니다.  이 비유의 촛점은 바로, 작은 씨앗으로 시작하여 큰 숲을 이룬다는 것입니다.  하나님의 나라는 이렇게 이루어진다고 말씀하신 겁니다.

초기 교회가 그랬습니다.  작은 사람들, 적은 사람들이 시작한 예수 운동이었습니다.  예수님과 열두제자. 그래요, 여자 제자들도 있었지요.  다 포함해서도 작은 숫자였습니다.  그런데 여러분 지금 크리스챤들이 몇명이 되는 줄 아십니까?  21억이 된다고 합니다. 32퍼센트의 세계 인구가 그리스도인들입니다.  10년전에는 유럽에 그리스도인들이 집중이 되어 있었는데, 이제는, 남미 북미 지역에 40퍼센트 가까이 살고, 아프리카에 24퍼센트의 그리스도인들이 살고 있고, 그리스도인 여덟명당 1명은 아시아와 태평양지역에 살고 있습니다.  온 세계에 흩어져 있습니다.  그리고 아직도 자라고 있습니다.  유럽과 미국에서는 교회가 쇠약해 가고 있습니다. 숫자가 줄어들고 있는 현실입니다.  다시 일어나야지요.  그런데, 아프리카, 남미, 아시아에서는 많은 사람들이 복음을 전달받고, 예수의 제자들이 되고 있습니다.  6월 초에 있었던, 뉴욕 연회에서도, 젊은이들 중심의 중국 교회가 새로이 연합 감리교회로 등록하고, 뉴욕 연회에 가입했습니다.  4월 플로리다에서 있었던 연합 감리교 총회에서, 저는 많은 아프리카 총대들을 만났습니다. 아프리카 대륙에서, 지금, 연합감리교회가 놀라운 속도로 성장하고 있습니다.  작은 씨앗이 이렇게 커가고 있습니다.

교회는 씨앗입니다.  하나님께서 우리를 세상 변혁을 위해서 이 곳에 심으셨습니다.  성경에서 모든 도덕 윤리가 시작되었습니다.  병원이 교회가 들어가는 곳 마다 생겼습니다. 학교가 세워졌습니다.  얼마나 많은 사람들에게 혜택을 주고, 이 세상의 빛이 되고 있습니까?  한국에 있는 대학, 이대, 연대 그리고 배재대 등등은 모두 미션 스쿨입니다.  교회가 있어서 생긴 학교들입니다.  얼마나 많은 사람들이 배출되었습니까?

우리가 부족하고, 깨지고, 아무짝에 없는 교회라고 할지라도, 교회가 이 세상에서 새롭게 일으키는 역사는 대단합니다.  하나님의 심으신 씨앗이기 때문입니다.  그 겨자씨의 역사는 끝나지 않았습니다.  56년 전에, 여기에 교회가 생겨서, 이제 이렇게 자라고 있습니다.  다음 주일에, 교회 생일 축하 하며, 예배와 친교를 할 계획입니다.  우리는, 하나님의 은헤 가운데, 지금까지 교회의 사명을 감당하며 왔습니다.  자부심을 가지시기를 바랍니다.  다른 연합감리교회와 연계하여서, 13개의 감리교 대학교를 지원합니다.  아프리카에 감리교 대학을 세웠습니다.  감리교 병원들이 세워졌습니다.

오래 전에 심기어진 작은 겨자씨가 계속 자라고 있습니다.  너무 천천히 자라고 있는 것 아닌가 생각되어지지만, 끊임없이 자라고 있습니다.  여기서도 자라고 있습니다.  우리 가운데에서도 자라고 있습니다.  우리를 통해 자라나고 있습니다.  우리가, 교회가 때때로 이 하나님 나라가 펼쳐지는 데 방해가 되기도 합니다만, 씨는 계속 자라서, 하늘에서 하나님의 뜻이 이루어진 것 처럼 땅에서도 이루어 질 것입니다. 할렐루야.  아멘.

이 겨자씨 교회 안에, 또 하나의 작은 겨자씨가 있습니다.  그 겨자씨가 자랍니다.  아이들을 보면서 깨닫습니다.  아이가 태어납니다.  신비입니다.  정자와 난자의 만남으로 시작은 이 생명체, 작은 아기가 태어나며는 얼마나 큰 변화가 일어납니까?  새로운 시작 아닙니까?  가정이 변하고, 교회가 변하고, 사회가 변합니다.  모든 아이들은 새로운 시작이 우리 가운데 있다는 희망의 상징입니다.

빅토리아 여왕이  영국의 왕실 보위대 모임에 참석하여서, 수상에게 묻기를 이 훌륭하고 박식이 있는 청년들이 다 어디서 왔습니까?  물었습니다.  이 때 수상의 답이, “아이들로 부터 왔습니다.”   아이들이 태어날 때마다, 작은 씨가 뿌려지는 것입니다.

지난 주에 학생 입교예식을 가졌습니다.  얼마나 감격인지 모릅니다. 대학생들에게 스칼라쉽도 주었습니다, 우리 아이들에게.  기뻤습니다.  우리 교회가 이렇게 있는 존재하고 있는 이유는 아이들을 키우는 일입니다.

“우리 아이들에게 무엇을 가르칩니까?  2 더하기 2 는 4?  파리는 프랑스의 수도이다?  물론 지식을 넣어 주어야 합니다.  공부 잘 해야 합니다.  그런데, 그 보다 더 중요한 것은, 그들이 누구인지도 가르쳐야 합니다.  “네가 누구인지 아니?  너는 소중한 사람이야.  이 세상에 한 명만에 없는 귀한 사람이야. 아무도 너랑 똑같은 사람이 이 세상에 없어. 네 팔, 네 눈, 네 귀, 네 얼굴, 네 웃음. 이 세상에 하나 밖에 없는 소중한 생명.  하나님의 아름다운 창조물.  하나님께서 네게 능력을 주었어. 너는 보물이야.”

그렇습니다.  우리 아이들은 보물입니다. 아이들은 바로 우리 교회가 심는 작은 씨앗입니다. 이들이 자라서, 이 세상 가운데에, 주님의 제자로, 나아갈 것입니다. 하나님의 사랑을 전하고 실천하고, 세상을 변혁하는 힘이 될 것입니다.  섬기는 지도자가 되어, 예수의 사역을 감당할 것입니다.

한 미국 상원의원의 이야기 입니다.  어릴 적에, 아버지는 술만 먹고, 어머니와 이혼하고. 가정이 깨져 있었습니다.  그래서, 할머니 집에서 어린 시절을 우울하고 힘들게 살았습니다.  주일이 되며는 할머니랑 교회를 다녔습니다.  교회 학교를 다녔습니다.  상원의원이 된 다음에, 어릴 적 교회를 찾았습니다.  그리고, 나이가 들어 할머니가 다 된 교회 학교 선생님을 만나서 감사하였습니다.  왠감사?  상원의원의 말이, ‘선생님께서 매 주일 교회에 오며는, 저를 꼭 품어주시면서, “너는 하나님의 귀한 존재야.  하나님이 너를 사랑해.” 라고 말씀해 주신 것이 제게 큰 힘이 되었습니다.”

우리 아이들은 우리에게 사랑을 많이 받아야 합니다.  우리가 보살피고 도와주어야 합니다.  작은 씨앗입니다.  우리가 하나님를 섬기고, 하나님의 나라 확장에 참여하는 한 방법은, 우리 아이들에게 그들이 누구인지, 그리고 그들을 통해서 하나님이 무엇을 할 수 있는 지를 알려주는 겁니다.  사랑받은 존재임을 가르쳐 주시고, 사랑 하는 존재임을 가르쳐 주는 겁니다.

2년 전에 돌아가신 아버지를 생각해 봅니다.  40년을 넘게 목회자로 사셨습니다.  저는 미국에 고등학교 졸업하고 왔는데, 어릴 적에, 한국에서, 아버지하고 함께 놀이터에 나가서 놀아 본 적이 없습니다. 물론 영화 구경도 간 본 적도 없고요.  나가서 음식점에 가서 외식해 본 적도 없습니다.  제게 주신 것이 하나도 없다는 생각이 듭니다.  그래서 이렇게 어른이 되었는데도 좀 섭섭해 합니다.  왜 나는 아빠하고 손잡고, 아빠하고 함께 정원가꾸고 놀지 도 못하고 살았나?   그런데, 한가지 기억하는 것이 있습니다.  아버지가 제게 해 주신 것 하나가 있습니다.  아버지는 저를 위해서 기도해 주셨습니다. 함께 식사하는 시간에 축복 기도를 해 주셨습니다.  먼 길을 갈 때나 큰 시험을 앞두고는 안수 기도 해 주셨습니다.  그리고, 간구하시기를, 많은 사람들에게 사랑을 주고, 사랑을 받는 하나님의 아들이 되게 해 달라고 하셨습니다.  아버지께서 제게 주신 가장 큰 선물이었습니다.  기도를 해 주심으로, 내가 하나님의 아름다운 창조물임을, 그리고 하나님의 사랑을 실천하는 삶을 살게 해 주셨습니다.

아버지만 하는 사역이 아닙니다. 모두가 하는 사역입니다.  한 아이를 키우기 위해서 온 동네가 필요하다는 아프리카 격언이 있지요?  한 아이에게 귀한 영향력을 끼치는 데는, 꼭 아버지여하고, 할아버지여야 하고, 삼촌이 되어야 하는 것이 아닙니다.  여기에 있는 우리 모두는 직접 간접으로 아이들에게 영향을 끼치고 있습니다.  교회 학교에서 헌신한 많은 교사들 중에 자기 아이가 없는 사람들이 많이 있음을 우리는 압니다.  온 교회가 함께 아이들을 키우는 겁니다.

크래닥 설교자로 유명한 분이십니다.  이 분이, 자기에게 가장 큰 영향력을 준 선생님을 소개했습니다.  그 분의 이름은 “미스 에마 스론”  나이가 많으신 미혼 할머니.  이 선생님에게 성경책을 받았는데, 성경 안쪽에, “이 책이 네 발의 빛이 되고, 네 앞길에 등불이 되기를 바란다.” 써 주셨습니다.  그 분은 우리에게 성경말씀을 외우라고 하셨습니다.  말씀을 해석하려고 하지 않고, 애써 설명을 하지 않았습니다. 성경 암송만을 강조하였습니다.

그분의 특유의 성경 암송 방법은, 알파벳을 이용하였는데,  아이들과 함께 외웠습니다.  “에이, (에이로 시작하는 성경말씀)  삐, (삐로 시작하는 말씀)  씨… “  크래닥 목사님은 아직 그 요절들을 기억하고 있다고 합니다.  “에마 선생님은 설명하려 들지 않았고, 그냥 씨를 뿌린 것입니다.  마음가운데 하나님의 말씀이 심어진 것입니다. 그리고, 시시 때때로 적절한 때에, 그 말씀이 떠올라서 위로받고 힘을 얻습니다.” 라고 고백하였습니다.

아버지가 되고 어머니가 되어야 영향력을 끼치는 것이 아닙니다.  모든 선생과 모든 성인들의 격려의 말이 변화를 일으킵니다.  어린이 학생들을 위하여, 교회의 재정을 준비하는 사람들도 영향을 끼치고 있는 겁니다.  네가 하나님의 나라를 위해서 뭘 할 수 있을까?  해외 선교할 수는 없고, 재산도 많이 없고.  우리가 할 수 있는 일이 있습니다.  아이들을 위해서 사역하는 겁니다.  그들을 사랑하고, 그들이 자라가는 데, 안전한 환경을 조성해 주고, 재미있는 추억거리를 만들어 주고. 그들이 바로 씨앗들입니다.  우리에게 주신 씨앗들입니다.  이들이 잘 심겨지고 자라도록 노력해야합니다.

“하나님의 나라를 어떻게 설명할꼬? 어떤 비유로 그 나라를 설명할꾜.  아하, 하나님의 나라는 겨자씨 와 같다.  이 세상에 가장 작은 겨자씨 같다.  이 작은 씨를 심으면, 자라서 가장 큰 나무가 되는 데  거기에 새들이 둥지를 틀고 자리 잡는다.”

오래 전에, 작은 무리가 예수님의 복음을 이 세상에 전하여, 그 겨자씨 씨앗이 힘차게 자라났습니다.  아직도 힘차게 자라고 있습니다.  우리 가운데, 또 작은 씨앗이, 우리 아이들이 힘차게 자라고 있습니다.   하나님 나라가 확장되고 있습니다.  하나님 나라 운동에, 적극 참여하시며, 하나님께 영광 돌리고, 하늘의 기쁨을 맛보시는 여러분과 제가 되기를 축원합니다.

Born again?

John 3:1-17

Trinity Sunday June 6, 2012

It is Trinity Sunday. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  It’s Trinity Sunday: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Three in one?  One in three?  God with three faces?  It is mysterious, isn’t it?  It is not an easy concept to understand.  St. Augustine, a 4^th century theologian, reached a similar conclusion after writing 800 pages on the Trinity.  He declared that he did not understand it.

This is his story.  As he walked along the seashore one day, he saw a small boy playing with a seashell. The boy scooped a hole in the sand, filled his shell with water and poured it into the hole. The great theologian asked the boy, “What are you doing, my son?” The youngster replied, “I am going to pour the sea into that hole.” Then Augustine said to himself, “That is what I have been trying to do. Standing at the ocean of infinity, I have attempted to grasp it with my finite mind.”

Mystery! Mystery is at the heart of the universe. Why am I here? Why are you here?  Why am I born in the parsonage?  Why are you born here while I am born in Korea?  Why am I a husband, brother and uncle?  Why are you who you are?  Why have I spent over 20 years in the Christian ministry? Why have you spent your life, or why are you planning to spend, your life pursuing a certain career?

There are times when it seems so natural to ask, why? in an effort to explore the deeper resources of our inner selves.

When I watch the Memorial Day parades, celebrating those who gave their lives for our freedom, I can’t help asking, why? why can’t we find a solution for war?  On those occasions when I feel down or feel distressed by the turmoils of the world, I ask, Why? Why? Why?

Mysteries.  Full of mysteries.  There are things about life and faith we do not understand. I am not going to suggest that you resign your effort to understand. Oh, no! the search is on!  But I am suggesting that you’ll add a plus to your search when you acknowledge the mysteries, claim them, and let them work for you.

This morning, Jesus comes to us, saying, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”   May I paraphrase his saying like this?  “Unless a person is born again, it is not possible to see what I am pointing to, to the mystery, that is, to the life with God.

Birth implies starting, a new beginning.

Born again implies a new beginning again.   Born once is not enough.  The first birth is just a beginning of this mysterious living.  You need to be born again to see the mystery of life, living with God.

Did I tell you that I got a new name?  As I turned to 50 about four years ago, I decided to have my own name.  Kun Sam was given by my father’s older brother when I was born.  I asked myself, “wouldn’t it be great if I name myself with a new name I myself pick?”  “Why not?”

One day, I happened to read an essay written by a Korean theologian and got my new name.  It is Dayfly.  Yes, a little fly you can see with a bunch of other flies during the summer time.  Dayfly lives one day, born in the morning and die in the evening.  I want to live like a dayfly, living one day.  No. not “one day at a time.”  “One day at a time” implies that I do have tomorrow and tomorrow and many days to come.  My name is One day living. Period.  “Haarusaarii” in Korean.

Guess what?  My life has been changed.  Every day is a new day.  Every day is a new life.  Born in the morning and dying in the evening.  When I go to bed, I am dying.  When I wake up, I am born again.  Yes, born again, live again.  Yes, it is resurrection.

Back to the ranch, Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”  What he says is that to be born again means being born of water and the spirit.

What does it mean by being born of water and the spirit?

First, being born of water.

Water is essential in our life.  No water means no life.  Water, both in us and around us, gives us life.  Just as a child cannot live without water in a mother’s womb, you and I cannot live without the water of God inside of us and around us.

We also need the water of God for being cleansed.  We need to be washed by the water of God every day.  Yes, we need to take shower every day with the water of God, because we think and do against God and our neighbors.

Paul the Apostle say in Romans 7:16, “In fact, I don’t understand why I act the way I do. I don’t do what I know is right. I do the things I hate.”   By nature, we do all kinds of dumb things. And we constantly need ourselves washed clean with the cleansing waters of God’s forgiveness.  Yes, we are forever in need of God’s cleansing waters.

Some people interpret Jesus’ words here as referring to the need of being baptized. And that’s true in part.  But not only do we need to be baptized once—we need to remember our baptism every day.   Paul says in Romans 6:4. Common English Bible “Don’t you know that all who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  Therefore, we were buried together with him through baptism into his death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead, we too can walk in newness of life.”   Yes, everyday we can be born again with Jesus who was raised from the dead, by remembering our baptism and giving thanks.

Jesus also says we are to be born of the spirit.  What does it mean?

To be born of the Spirit is not just to have a religious high, kind of like having religious champagne, becoming all spiritually bubbly inside.

To be born of the spirit means to live with the Spirit of Christ.  As it says in Philippians 2:5: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.  Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.  Have Christ’s Spirit in your heart, in your mind, in your hands, in your feet, in you.  So we are filled with his spirit, spirit of love, spirit of forgiveness, spirit of peace.

Once filled with the Spirit of Christ, then, there is love, forgiveness, peace in our living, in our relationship with others.   We do love as Jesus has loved us.  We do forgive as people forgiven by God.  We do not condemn others.  Yes, like Paul says, “we are not the same old being any longer.  See, in Christ, we are a new creation.”  because all we do and say will be in tune with the Spirit of Jesus.

“All sounds nice, Pastor Cho”  But I have a question to ask you.  “Am I born again?  Am I a born again Christian?”  Don’t ask me.  Please ask yourself.  Ask God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit, and you will hear the answer.

“The wind blows wherever it pleases.  You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.  So it is with everyone born of the spirit.”

What he says is we are in this mysterious living.  He does not mean, I think, that we do this faith journey aimlessly without knowing the destination.  He means, I believe that “Born again people” are willing to be led by the Spirit of living God with a total trust in the Lord Jesus and his leadership in the middle of their life journey.

The cover story for this coming week ‘Times” magazine reads, “How to die.”  But I am glad we have Jesus, our Lord and our God, talking to us this morning about “how to live”.   How to live eternally now.  “Born again.  Born of water and the spirit.”

As we come together around the Communion Table this morning, we are reminded of the mystery of God’s saving and reconciling ministry.  God has reconciled with us through Christ, so that we may live in peace with God and with one another.  Christ died, so that we may live, live eternally now.

God the Father, invites all of us to enter and taste the mystery of His presence and salvation.  Let’s join together with joy and thanksgiving.  In the name of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

거듭나지 않으면…

오늘 성삼위 일체 주일입니다.  성부 성자 성신.  우리는 성부와 성자와 성신을 믿습니다.  삼위가 다르지만 하나임을 믿습니다.  이것은 신비입니다.  우리의 제한된 머리로 이해할 수 없는 하나님의 신비의 역사입니다. 성 어거스틴도 4세기에, 800쪽이 넘는 삼위일체론에 관한 글을 쓴 후에, 이해 할 수 없는 교리라고 결론을 내렷습니다.  이런 이야기가 있습니다.  어느 날 해변가를 따라 걷는데, 한 소년이 조개껍데기를 가지고 놀고 있는 것을 발견하였습니다.  해변 모래밭에 구멍을 만들어 놓고는, 조개껍데기로 바다물을 담아, 그 모래 구멍에 넣고 있었습니다.  소년에게 묻기를,  “뭘하고 있는거니?’ 하였더니, 그 소년 왈, “바닷물을 이 구멍에 다 넣으려고요.”  어거스틴이 깨닫기를, “바로 이것이 내가 하려는 헛수고였구나.  심원의 바다에 서서, 그것을 나의 제한된 생각으로 잡아보려고 했구나.”  고백하였습니다.

신비, 신비 입니다.  우주가 신비로 가득차 있습니다.  왜 내가 이 땅에 태어나 있습니까? 왜 내가 여기 이렇게 있습니까?  왜 여러분이 여기에서 살고 있습니까?   왜, 여러분이 이렇게 오랜기간 이 교회에 몸담고 살고 있고, 저랑 함께 사역을 하고 있습니까?   왜 결혼하고 아이낳고 이렇게 살고 있습니까?   왜, 남편으로, 아내로, 부모로, 할아버지 할머니로, 왜 살아가고 있습니까?   왜 앞을 계획하고 나아가고 있습니까?

지난 주에 메모리알 데이 주일을 보내면서, 왜 전쟁이 있어야 합니까?  왜 무고한 생명들이 죽어야만 합니까?  왜 전쟁이 없는 세상은 가능하지 않는 것입니까?   또, 수없는 아이들이 여자들이, 왜 못 먹고 굶어 죽어야 합니까?  왜? 질문이 많습니다.  “왜” 라는 제목의 책이 있습니다.  입교반 아이들에게 선물로 주려고 합니다.  “왜”라는 질문을 늘 하니까요.  그런데 입교반 아이들 뿐만이 아니라 우리 모두도 이 “왜” 라는 질문이 있습니다.  이 질문을 가지고 우리는 살아갑니다.

신비로운 삼위일체 하나님을 역사 가운데 사는 우리들은,  삶의 신비 가운데 어떻게 살아야 합니까?  오늘 말씀에 보니가, 거듭나서 살아야 한다고 말씀하셨습니다.

니고데모에게 하시는 말씀이, 네가 거듭나지 않으면 하나님 나라에 들어갈 수 없느니라..

거듭나는 삶입니다.  다시 태어나는 삶입니다.  니고데모에게 하신 말씀. 네가 다시 태어나야만 한다고 하셨습니다.  태어남은 시작입니다.  다시 태어남이란 다시 시작함입니다. 한번 태어남으로 삶이 시작하고 끝이 나는 것이 아닙니다.  다시 태어남으로 삶이 다시 시작하는 겁니다. “아니 어떻게 다 큰 우리가 어머니 몸 속에 다시 들어가서 나올 수 있습니까?”  육체의 다시 태어남을 말하는 것이 아님을 우리는 압니다.

제 이름이 일생입니다. 하루살이입니다.  이렇게 정했습니다, 제가 50이 넘어가면서, 스스로에게 이름을 하나 지어주고 싶었습니다.  건삼은, 우리 큰 아버지께서 만들어 주신 이름이라고 합니다.  새 이름을 찾는 가운데, “하루살이”라는 수필을 읽게 되었습니다.  그리고는 정했습니다. “하루살이”가 내 새 이름이다.

새 이름을 가지니까, 새로운 시작이 되었습니다.  매일이 부활의 삶임을 알게 되었습니다.  매일이 진정 하나님의 선물임을 알게 되었습니다.  매일의 매 순간이 매 만남이 얼마나 소중한 지를 알게 되었습니다.

그런데 오늘 말씀에 보며는, 주님께서 하시는 말씀이, 물과 성령으로 거듭나지 않으면, 하나님 나라에 들어갈 수 없다고 하셨습니다.  이게 무슨 말씀입니까?   물과 성령으로 거듭나는 삶이 거듭난 삶, 새로운 삶의 특징임을 알 수 있습니다.

물로 거듭난다는 말씀이 무슨 뜻입니까?

물은 생명입니다.  물 없이는 죽습니다.  생명을 주시는, 하나님의 생수가 우리의 안과 밖, 우리의 주변에 있어야 합니다.  이 물이 우리에게 생명을 줍니다.  하나님 없이는 죽습니다.

하나님의 물로 씻김도 받아야 합니다. 그래야 거듭나는 삶을 다시 사는 삶을 삽니다. 다시 말하면, 매일 우리들의 죄들을 씻김 받아야 합니다.  우리는 죄성을 가지고 있는 존재이기에, 우리는 계속하여 죄 씻음을 받아야 합니다.  청결함을 받아야 합니다.

로마서 7장에.  기억나시죠?  하고 싶은 선한 일은 하지않고, 하지 말아야 할 것들을 하는 하는 우리의 모습.  우리는 죄를 수없이 짓습니다. 알게 모르게 짓습니다.  어쩔 수 없습니다.  인간이기에.  그런데 포기하지 않습니다. 그래서 하나님의  청결케하는 생수로 씻음을 받아야 합니다.  매일 매일. 모두에게 해당하는 말입니다.

어떤 사람들은 물로 거듭나야 한다는 말씀을 세례를 받아야 한다고 해석합니다.  맞는 말씀입니다.  그런데 세례를 한 번 받은 것으로 죄 씻음이 끝난 것이 아니고, 매일 세례를 기억해야 합니다. 로머서 6장 6-8절 말씀에, “우리가 알거니와 우리의 옛 사람이 예수와 함께 십자가에 못 박힌 것은 죄의 몸이 죽어 다시는 우리가 죄에게 종 노릇 하지 아니하려 함이니 이는 죽은 자가 죄에서 벗어나 의롭다 하심을 얻었음이라 만일 우리가 그리스도와 함께 죽었으면 또한 그와 함께 살 줄을 믿노니.” 매일 세례를 기억하고, 감사하는 삶이 거듭나는 삶입니다.

두번째 말씀이, 성령으로 거듭나야 하셨습니다. 무슨 말씀입니까?

성령으로 거듭난다는 말씀은, 환상적이고 황홀한 영적 체험을 해야 한다는 말씀이 아닙니다.  일시적인 기쁨이나 흥분으로 우리의 삶이 거듭날 수가 없습니다.  대학교 때, 청년부때에, 부흥회 참석하고, 금식 기도회 다녀오고 뜨겁게 신앙생활 한 적 있습니다.  그런데, 곧 식어지고, 많은 친구들이 교회를 떠났습니다.

성령으로 태어나는 삶이란,  우리의 삶 가운데 그리스도의 영이 오셔서 내주하시는 삶입니다.  빌립보서 2장 5절 말씀에, “너희들 가운데 이 마음을 품으라, 곧 그리스도 예수의 마음이니.”  그리스도의 영이 우리의 마음, 우리의 삶에, 우리의 가슴에 우리의 영혼에 우리의 머리에 가득찬 삶입니다.  그래서 그리스도의 사랑, 용서 그리고 평화가 가득차, 이 세상을 살아가는 삶입니다.  그러니까, 삶 가운데 사랑이 있습니다. 용서가 있습니다.  평화가 있습니다.  사랑을 이룹니다.  용서를 합니다.  평화를 이룹니다.  잘못했다고 고백을 해야 사랑하고 용서하는 사랑과 용서가 아닙니다.  그리스도께서 우리를 조건 없이 사랑하고 용서하신 것 같이 우리도 사랑하고 용서하는 삶으로 나가가는 겁니다.  남을 정죄하지 않는 삶입니다.  요한복음 8장 11절. “나도 너를 정죄하지 않는다.”  이것이 그리스도의 영에 사로잡혀 사는, 거듭난 삶입니다.

여러분 중에, 이런 질문을 하시는 분이 계실 겁니다.  “목사님, 참 좋은 말씀입니다.  그런데, 질문드릴께 있습니다.”  “제가 다시 태어났습니까?”  “제가 물과 성령으로 거듭났습니까?  거듭나고 있습니까?’  제게 질문하지 마세요. 하나님께 질문하세요.  하나님께서 응답하실 겁니다.

주님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.  “바람이 임의로 불매 네가 그 소리를 들어도 어디서 오며 어디로 가느지 알지 못하나니 성령으로 난 사람은 다 이러하니라.”

이 말씀을 저는 이렇게 이해합니다.  바로 신비의 삶을 살아가는 데, 우리가 방향 없이 간다는 말씀이 아니라, 바로 성령의 역사 가운데 움직이고 있다는 말씀이십니다.  바람이 어디에서 와서 어디로 가는 지를 모르지만, 우리는 압니다.  바람이 움직이고 있음을.  마찬가지로, 우리의 삶에 신비함이 가득차 있지만, 그 가운데 성령의 움직임이 인도하심이 있음을 믿습니다.   그리고 우리는 그 인도하심에 몸을 맡깁니다.

타임 메거진 커버 스토리가 “어떻게 죽는가?”  입니다.  기쁘고 감사한 것은, 우리 주님은 오늘 “어떻게 사는가”에 관하여 말씀해 주셨습니다.  어떻게 지금, 오늘, 영생의 삶을 살 수 있는 지를 가르쳐 주셨습니다.

오늘 성만찬을 나눕니다. 신비의 만찬입니다.  만찬에 참여하면서, 하나님께서, 주님을 통해, 인간들을 위해 행하신 신비한 사역을 기억합니다.  우리와 화해의 길을 열어주시고, 우리로 하여금 하나님과 화해하며 이웃과 화해하며 살도록 새 길을 열어주셨습니다.  우리가 회복하기를 원하셔서, 거듭나기를 지극히 원하셨습니다. 주님의 십자가의 죽음으로 우리는 새로운 삶을 살게 되었습니다.   하나님께서 우리를 그의 자리로, 그의 구원의 자리에 초대하십니다.  기쁨과 감사함으로 함께 나아가기를 원합니다.
