The Gentle Healer

John 9:1-41

Years ago, I heard a speaker or read an article about the Wycliff Bible translators working in Africa. They always asked the local people to help them translate the Scripture.  In one particular area, the people were helping but without a whole lot of enthusiasm. No one even seemed to even be the least bit interested in the story of Jesus, until they came to the passage we heard this morning.  And then the whole village began to buzz with excitement.  The translators couldn’t understand why, so they asked.  One of the villagers told them that amongst the men, one way that a man’s greatness was measured by was how far he could spit.  It turns out they were in awe of Jesus because his spit was so powerful that it could heal a man who was born blind and give him back his sight.  It was that opening that helped people in that village hear the Word of God.

Jesus’ disciples encounter a man blind from birth. And they ask Jesus, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  Their question is, “Whose fault is it?”  They looked for somebody to blame for this man’s misfortune.    “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  It’s an absurd question, of course.

How could a man born blind be responsible for his predicament?  How could he sin in his mother’s womb?  Kicking too hard in the womb?  The disciples might reply, saying, “if it were not him, then, it must be his parent’s fault.  His parents must have offended God sometime in the past maybe without even realizing it and this was their punishment.”  It is an absurd line of thinking, isn’t it?

And yet, when something tragic happens in our life, we often ask ourselves, “did I somehow cause this?” or “Is God punishing me for some transgressions that I committed without realizing it?”  Even when something bad happens to our neighbors, we ask, “what have they done wrong?”  Don’t we?

We all heard and saw the disaster happened in Japan last month, exactly March 11. What a powerful earthquake and enormous Tsunami!  Many lives are lost.  Houses, factories and farm lands are destroyed.  Many are homeless and suffering.  Even worse, they have been exposed to radioactive elements and now under the threat of the radioactive water leak.    A well known pastor in Korea comments right after the earthquake, saying that  “Japanese people got punished because they don’t believe in God.  God has punished them for their unbelief and idol worshipping.”   What an arrogant and absurd comment!  Worse than all, he is not the only one who thinks that day.

“Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  Jesus’ answer to his disciples’ question is intriguing: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”  Jesus told them that the man being born blind had absolutely nothing to do with sin at all.  It had everything to do with what God was going to do with his blindness.

Jesus focused not on the cause of the problem, but on how God can use the problem God’s glory.  His disciples ask “Why?”  Jesus shifted the focus to “How?”   Not why it happened?  But how would God do in this situation?   Some might ask, “does it mean that God inflicted blindness upon this man at birth just so he could be an object lesson?”  “Not at all.”  It is not God’s will that this man or any man or woman whoever they may be blind.

Blindness comes from many sources. It might be the result of trauma or disease. In a man born blind, maybe damage to a gene was responsible. We don’t know.   However, we do know this: if you are blind, physically blind, you are not that way because God willed it.

If you have cancer, or some other adverse condition, it is not because God willed it.  If you are going through a devastating time financially, it is not because God willed it.  God’s will is always for wholeness and health. God’s will is for our needs to be met. That is why Christ healed this man.  Healing is God’s will.  Hallelujah!  Amen.

Notice how Christ heals this man. According to our lesson, he spits on the ground, makes some mud with the saliva, and puts it on the man’s eyes. Then he tells the blind man to go wash in the Pool of Siloam.  Now the blind man might have responded to Jesus’ actions in many ways. He could have said, “This is dumb. How in the world could putting mud on my eyes heal me? I’m not going to move one inch. It’s ridiculous.”  That is how many of us might have responded.  That’s how this man could have responded.

But we know what he did.  As John indicates, he immediately went to the pool, washed in the pool, and came home seeing.  He responded Jesus in faith.  I wonder why Jesus used this particular method of healing on this man.  You know Jesus could have simply spoken and the same result would have been accomplished.  Maybe it was important to Jesus to see this man do his part, which is having faith and washing in the pool.

Do we have some tragedy in our life or in the life of someone we love? If so, we need to believe that God’s will is for healing.   We look for that healing and we respond to that healing.  And we never give up hope, because we know, just as Christ healed the man blind from birth, God’s will is for all God’s children to be healed, to be well, and to be strong.  Hallelujah!

I shared one of my favorite songs.  “Winter, Spring, Autumn or Fall…. You got a friend.”  One of my favorite hymns is “To God Be the Glory, great things he hath done.”  What a great hymn of praise to God.   Another one, “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine.  This is my story, this is my song”    “Jesus, Keep Me near the Cross, there a precious fountain.  In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever”  “Pass Me not, O Gentle Savior, hear my humble cry.”

Did you know that all of these favorites hymns that I have named have something in common?  They were all written by the same person.  In fact, there are many hymns written by that person.  Her name was Fanny Crosby born in New York and died in Bridgeport, CT.

When Fanny was six weeks old, she had an eye infection.  Her regular doctor was out of town, and a man posing as a doctor gave her the wrong treatment.  Within a few days, she was blind.    Fanny was never bitter and she never felt sorry for herself.  When she was only eight years old, she wrote this poem:

Oh, what a happy child I am,  Although I can not see. I am resolved that in this world, Contented I will be. How many blessings I enjoy That other people don’t.  To weep and sigh because I’m blind, I cannot and I won’t!

Instead of being bitter and feeling sorry for herself, Fanny used the gifts that God had given her to write over 8,000 hymns and poems to praise and glorify God.  God didn’t heal her physical blindness.  She used the tragedy of her blindness to glorify God.  She was well with her soul.

I pray that tragedy will never come into your life, but if it does, remember that everything that happens can be used to praise and glorify God!   St. Paul says to us in Romans 8:28,  “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Yes, God can use even the most adverse circumstances to bring a blessing into our life.  That can be a divine way God brings healing to our life.  So when we are going through a difficult time, we look for some way this can be used to God’s glory.

Yes, God can and does use our experiences to help and encourage others who are going through similar or even the same problems.  God can and does use our suffering and even our failures to bring about change in the hearts and lives of our friends.

God’s will is always for our best good. God wants us to be well.  So, in times of suffering, we remind ourselves of that truth: God wants us to be well.

The Gentle Healer is here at church today.  He is the truth, the life, the way.  He wants to touch us and heal us.  Will you come to encounter Him with your hurts and your pains and your problems as you come to receive this holy sacrament today?  The Gentle Healer is here at church today.  In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

치유의 역사를 하시는 하나님

요한복음 9장 1절-49절

아프리카에서 위클리프 성경 번역을 하는 사람들에게 있었던 이야기를 들은 적이 있습니다.  그들이 동네 사람들 몇명에게 번역하는 것을 도와주고 있었습니다. 그런데 모두들 그렇게 열정적으로 번역에 참여하지 않았습니다.  예수님의 이야기를 신나게 여기지 않았습니다.  그런데 어느 날, 오늘 읽은 말씀을 일고 난 후에, 동네에 변화가 생겼습니다.  그 이유를 물었더니, 도리어 왜 예수님이 이렇게 위대한 지를 알려주지 않았느냐고 화를 냈습니다.  다행이 어떤 동네 사람이 말해 주기를, 그 동네에서는 남자가 남자다움을 내보이는데 필요한 능력이 얼마나 멀리 침을 뱉느냐에 있다고 믿고 있는데, 그들이 예수님께서 침으로 눈 먼자를 고쳐서, 볼 수 있게 했다는 이야기를 읽고 감동을 먹은 것입니다.  이 계기로, 하나님의 말씀을 경청하고, 번역하는 데 힘을 쓰게 되었다는 이야기입니다.

오늘 말씀을 세 분께서 잘 전해주셔서, 우리 모두가 하나님의 말씀을 신선하게 듣는 기회를 갖게 되었습니다.  다티, 쥬디 그리고 브라이언 교우님께 감사합니다.

“선생님, 이 자의 죄 때문입니까? 아니면 부모의 죄 때문입니까?  이렇게 눈이 먼 상태에서 태어난 것이?”   먼저, 예수님께 제자들이 질문을 합니다.  빗나간 질문입니다.  누가 잘못했냐는 것입니다. 이 사람이 어떻게 엄마 뱃속에서 죄를 지을 수 있습니까?  그렇다면, 부모의 죄임에 분명하다고 생각했던 것입니다.  지은 지도 모를 죄로 인해서 하나님의 비위를 거슬리게 했다고 주장하는 겁니다.  말도 안되지요?  그런데 우리가 자주, 이런 빗나가는 생각을 합니다.  비극이 일어날 때에, 우리는 질문합니다.  왜 이런 일이 일어났나?  나도 모르게 지은 죄로 인해서 하나님께서 벌을 주시고 계시나?  남에게 좋지 않은 일이 생기면, 우리는, “무슨 잘못을 했나” 질문하지 않습니까?

이번에 일본에서 지진, 쓰나미가 일어났습니다.  많은 인명 피해가 있었습니다.  많은 사람들이 아지고 힘들어 하고 있습니다.  재산 피해도 어마 어마합니다.  왜 이런 일이 있습니까?  왜 일본에 그렇게 큰 재앙이 있었습니까?  왜 많은 사람들이 생명을 잃고, 왜 많은 재산들이 파괴되고, 왜 이런 비극이 있습니까?   조 용기 목사가, “일본 사람들이 하나님을 경외하지 않아서, 예수님을 믿지 않아서 벌을 받았다” 하였지요?  이렇게 생각하는 사람이, 조 목사 외에도 많지요?

그런데 보세요.  어떻게, 주님께서, “누구의 죄로 인함입니까?”  질문했을 때, 답하셨습니까? 예수님 말씀하시기를, “아무의 죄로 인함이 아니다.  그의 삶에 하나님의 역사가 있음을 보여주기 위해서 이런 것이다.”   신학적 논쟁을 할 필요가 없다고 여기신 것입니다.  예수님은 대신, 분명하게, 그 사람의 죄와도, 그 사람의 부모의 죄와는 아무 상관이 없다고 하셨습니다.  예수님께서는, 하나님께서 그의 눈 먼 상태로 있는 그의 삶에 무엇을 하고 계신가에 초점을 맞추셨습니다.  제자들은, “왜”에 관심을 가졌는데, 주님께서는, “어떻게”에 관심을 갖고 계셨습니다.   하나님께서 어떻게, 우리의 당한 문제를 다루시고, 결국 하나님의 선한 뜻을 이루시느냐에 초점을 맞추셨습니다.

그러면 이런 질문을 할 수 있습니다.  “하나님께서 어떤 역사를 하실 지 보여주기 위해서, 이 사람에게 태어나면서 앞을 못 보게 하신것 입니까?”   물론 아닙니다.  하나님의 뜻은,  누구든지, 장님으로 태어나게 하신 것이 아닙니다.

태어나면서, 눈이 멀 수 있는 경우가 다양합니다.  병으로 인해서 그럴 수도 있고, 유전자에 변화가 생겨서 그럴 수도 있습니다.  의사의 실수있을 수 도 있습니다.  그 이유를 정확히는 모릅니다.

그러나 분명히 아는 것은, 만약에 당신이 장님으로 태어났다면, 그것은 하나님께서 원해서가 아니라는 말씀입니다.   암이 걸렸습니까?  하나님이 원하신 것이 아닙니다. 힘든 상황에, 재정적으로 힘듭니까?  하나님께서 원하셔서 그런 일이, 그런 상황에 빠졌습니까?  아닙니다.  하나님의 뜻은, 우리를 향하신 하나님의 마음은, 온전히 우리가 사는 겁니다.  건강하게 사는 겁니다.  하나님께서는 우리가 그렇게 살기를 원하십니다.  그래서 예수님께서 이 사람을 고치셨습니다.  고침은 바로 하나님의 열망이십니다.  우리를 고치시기를 원하십니다. 할렐루야 아멘.

어떻게 주님께서 고치셨는지, 그의 눈을 뜨게 하셨는지를 보기 원합니다.   흙에다가 침을 뱉으시고, 그리고 침으로 진흙을 만드셔서, 그 사람의 눈에 바르셨습니다.  실로암 연못에 가서 씻으라고 했습니다.  이 눈먼 사람이 어떻게 반응을 보일 수 있습니까?  “진흙을 바르고 가서 씻으라고?  이런 것으로 눈이 떠진 다면, 누가 믿겠나? 어리석은 일” 라고 할 수 있습니다.   우리도 이런 반응을 보일 수 있습니다.   그렇지요?  그런데 이 눈먼 사람은 즉시 못을 가서, 말씀하신대로 씻었습니다.  그리고 눈이 떠졌습니다. 믿음을 나아갔습니다.  믿음으로 행했습니다.  믿음으로 고침을 받았습니다.

왜 주님께서 이렇게 눈먼자를 눈을 뜨게 고쳐 주셨는 지 모릅니다.  다른 방법을 사용하실 수도 있었을 겁니다.  그냥 눈을 떠라 그럴 수도 있으셨습니다.  그런데, 이 사람이 말씀에 순종하는 믿음을 보시기를 원하셨을 지도 모릅니다.

여러분의 삶에 비극이 있습니까?  여러분이 사랑하는 사람의 삶에 아픔이 있습니까? 깨짐이 있습니까?  하나님께서는 고치시기를 원하십니다.  고치시는 하나님을 바라보세요.  고침을 주시는 하나님의 말씀에 순종하세요.  포기하지 마세요.  그리스도께서 태어나면서 부터 장님이 사람을 고치셨듯이, 하나님의 자녀들이 건강하고, 잘 살기를 원하십니다.

우리가 사는 동안에 많은 아픔이 있습니다.  육신적으로, 정신적으로, 감정적으로 재정적으로 문제를 많이 만납니다.  이때에, 우리가 누구 때문입니까?  내 죄 때문입니까?  앉아서 한탄하고 있으면 안됩니다.  신세 타령하면 안됩니다.

고치시는 하나님, 우리가 건강하게 살기를 원하시는 하나님을 만나셔야 합니다.  그리고 말씀에 따라 나아가야 합니다.  믿음으로, 하나님께서 당신을 고치시고, 당신의 마음을 변화시키시고, 감정을 다루셔서, 온전케 하심을 믿고 나아가야 합니다.  마음을 여시고, 주님의 퍼부어주시는 치유의 역사를 맞아들이시기를 바랍니다.

지난 주일에 제가 좋아하는 노래, ‘당신은 친구가 있습니다.” 소개했습니다.  제가 좋아하는 찬송가는,  “예수를 내가 주로 믿어” “예수여, 예수여 나의 죄 위하여”  “인애하신 구세주여 내 말 들으사  죄인 오라 하실 때에 불러주소서”  이 찬송가가 갖고 있는 공통점이 무엇인지 아십니까?  작사자가 한 사람이라는 것입니다.  훼니 크로스비 입니다.

이 분은 태어난 지 6주 만에 눈에 이상이 생겨서, 장님이 되었습니다. 그런데 훼니는 8살 때에 이런 시를 썼습니다.  “내가 얼마나 행복한 아이인가, 볼 수는 없지만, 만족하네.  얼마나 많은 복을 누리고 있나. 볼 수 없다고 울고 허탈해 하지 않을 것이다, 결코 그렇지 않을 것이다.”  훼니는 하나님이 주신 재능을 가지고, 8000개가 넘는 찬송가를 작사 작곡 하였습니다. 그리고 하나님께 영광을 돌렸습니다.

성경의 장님처럼 볼 수 있게 되지 않았습니다. 하나님께서 볼 수 있도록 치료하지 않았습니다.  그런데, 훼니는 보이지 않는 그 상태에서, 하나님께 감사와 영광을 돌렸습니다.   우리의 삶에 비극이 일어나지 않기를 바랍니다.  그런데, 비극 속에서, 하나님의 영광이 드러나고, 하나님께서 역사하십니다.

바울 사도의 고백이 바로 우리의 고백이 되기를 바랍니다. 로마서 8장 28절에,
“우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라.”  하나님께서는 우리의 가장 어려운 상황과 환경도 사용하셔서, 선을 이루어내시는 분이십니다.  우리의 현재 상황을 가운데에서도, 우리의 삶에, 우리 이웃의 삶에 치유를 주시고, 복을 주시기를 원하시는 분이십니다.

어떤 상황에 있느냐가 중요하지 않습니다.  우리의 비극이 없어졌느냐가 중요하지 않습니다. 하나님께서는 어떤 상황 속에서도 일하시며, 우리의 인도자, 치유자가 되십니다.

우리를 통해, 다른 이들을 도우시고, 우리의 아픔을 통해서도 우리의 실수를 통해서도 일하십니다.  우리를 세우시고, 우리를 통해서, 다른 이들에게 희망을 주시고, 우리의 삶에 새로운 시작을 허락하십니다.

우리의 문제가 다른이들에게 새로운 동기부여가 될 수도 있습니다.  우리의 고난을 인내로 이겨 나가는 것을 통해서, 다른 이들에게 힘과 용기를 주실 수 있습니다.

하나님의 뜻은 우리에게 가장 선한 것을 허락하시는 겁니다.  하나님은 우리가 건강하기를 원하십니다.  하나님은 우리의 필요가 채워지기를 원하십니다. 힘든 고난 중에도 우리가 기억해야 할 일은, 하나님께서 우리가 회복되기를 원하신다는 사실입니다.

치유자 주님께서 오늘 여기에 계십니다. 그는 진리이시고, 생명이시고 길이십니다.  그는 우리를 어루만져 주시고, 우리를 치유하시기를 원하십니다.

성만찬을 함께 나누면서, 여러분이 가지고 있는 모든 상처, 아픔, 그리고 문제와 영적 빈곤함을 모두 가지고 나오실 때, 주님 만을 신뢰하지 않으시겠습니다.  치유하시기를 원하시는 주님께서 오늘 여기에 계십니다.  당신을 맞이하십니다.  아멘.
